Kerry Moon, canteen supervisor for Normanhurst West Public
School is over the moon after receiving a diamond award (the highest
possible) for the fourth year in a row in the NSW Canteen Association's
Awards. This year over 270 schools were entered for the awards which
demand that menus offered by those canteens entering include over 90% of
recommended and registered products. the canteen must cover at least 3
areas of the school curriculum. |
In Normanhurst West's case: students conducted
a survey of the canteen as part of their Mathematics studies;
another group decorated the canteen with their art works and a third group
held a debate on the topic, 'Healthy Choices for Canteen food'.
The Association also requires that the school has a policy and this policy
must be communicated to the total school body. Kerrie has achieved this
through newsletters and notices. Another requirement of the Awards is that
the canteen hold at least 3 promotions per year.
In an innovative move, Kerrie and her team of 50 parent volunteers
introduced 'Dad's Day' once a term. There have also been special theme
days such as 'Magical Monday', a
Harry
Potter Day' with the dads dressed as wizards. In Winter there was a
"Footy Day' and
more recently a 'Beach Boys Day'.
Kerrie was very happy to accept the award but explained that none of it
would have been possible without the support of the staff at the school,
the children and the fifty volunteer mums and dads. |
