This special education support class is situated within Normanhurst west public School. The purpose of this class is to work with children who have a diagnosed disability and their families in developing school readiness and life skills.
The class is run by the NSW Department of education and training and has a full time Special Education Teacher, Mrs V Leach. There is also a teacher's aide while the children are in session. The class falls under the jurisdiction of the school's Principal, Mr B Kunkler.
Any child between 3 years and 6 years of age with a diagnosed disability is eligible to apply for attendance at the Early Intervention Unit or to be placed on the Special Education teacher's Outreach Resource caseload.
Application for a child to be considered for a place within the unit have to be addressed to the Special education Consultant at Hornsby District Office. A panel then assists with determining each child's eligibility criteria.
The Early Intervention Class operates within Departmental Guidelines, which outlines operating times, attendance numbers and general programming procedures.
